A provocation ...

... for the entire TV nation! On 12 May 1971 female journalist Wibke Bruhns, 32, reads the news on the ZDF channel for the first time.

"Wibke Bruhn's sexy blouse distracts even TV anchorman bulletWerner Höfer from the news," reads the headline of an article in the daily Kölnische Rundschau on 14 May 1971, which goes on to take malicious delight in listing her speaking mistakes.

Women have no place in the serious world of news. Why? Because reports of war and disaster should not come from the sweet lips of the fairer sex. Women are emotional creatures, lack objectivity and therefore won't be believed.

The papers are particularly concerned for the male viewers "who might be too distracted by a sexually attractive newscaster."
