A new generation of dramatists

"Stücke" ("Plays"), the NRW Drama Festival in Mülheim, is inaugurated in May 1976.

Now endowed with the equivalent of 10,000 euros, the Mülheim drama award is mainly intended for young German-language playwrights. Seven or eight plays are usually invited to enter each year and are premiered at the festival.

Elfriede Jelinek, Botho Strauß, Klaus Pohl and other prominent dramatists have been among the award-winners chosen by an independent jury made up of theatre people, critics and dramatists, in discussion with the audiences.
