Group 47: formative for post-war literature

Readings and workshops open up a debate on new directions for German literature.

"Die Gruppe 47" meets for the first time in September 1947. The discussions on new literature and the readings are actually organised in order to gather contributions to a new literary satirical magazine called the "Skorpion".

Under the auspices of Hans Werner Richter, various writers come to together to discuss unpublished manuscripts. Surprised at how rewarding they find the debate with fellow authors, they decide to meet regularly.

Between 1947 and 1967 a series of prominent NRW's literary figures read their material to the Group; increasingly popular authors like bulletHeinrich Böll are joined by Paul Schallück, Rolf Schroers, Ruth Rehmann and others.

In 1967 the Cologne writer Jürgen Becker becomes the last of the Gruppe 47 literati to win a literature prize.
