CARE for coal

The long title may be daunting to some: "Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe". But bulletCARE packages are very much in demand ...

Each package contains 20 kilos of basic foodstuffs. The voluntary-sector American relief organisation aims to alleviate hunger during the years of hardship in Germany.

As of 25 July 1947, CARE packages are distributed to coalminers as added rations to boost output: pitmen who extract the maximum quantity of coal in a four-week period receive a special allocation.

In this way the food relief serves to keep workers going in the mining industry and other heavy-industry sectors that are so vital to German reconstruction.
